2010 Nightingale Gala - Another Great Success

The 2010 annual Nightingale Gala by all standards was once again a terrific success. In addition to showing our support for our nursing community, this years event raised nearly $35,000 for nursing scholarships, exceeding last years total and bringing our five year total scholarship awards to $175,000.  "It was an excellent night," said Grace Bottomley, chairperson for this years event. "I think everyone really enjoyed themselves thanks to the wonderful support from the community, our members and the improvements we’ve been able to make to the event each year.  Ursula Pari, as usual, did and outstanding job as our Master of Ceremonies and the music by the Court Jesters was absolutely fabulous.  Great food, lively auctions, a Champagne Toast to nursing and great fellowship made for a truly remarkable and fun filled evening.”

“The turnout was great” according to Betty Vargas, President of the Medical Center Rotary Club the sponsor of the event. “Everything seemed much smoother this year thanks to our experience, our members and the dedicated volunteers who help us with the event.” Thanks to the generous support of  local sponsors and donors, plus the many individuals who attended our event we will be awarding approximately 40 nursing scholarships during the 2010-2011 school year.

Nine Local Nurses Receive Excellence In Nursing Awards

Each year local nurses are selected and presented with the Nightingale Excellence In Nursing Award. The goals of this program are to focus public attention on the San Antonio nursing profession and recognize individual professional achievement for individuals who serve as role models for our future nurses.

Medical Center Rotary - Making Dreams Real
"Making Dreams Real" is what our Club is all about. Since we were chartered in 2005 our dream has always been to have every nursing student realize their dream of becoming a licensed health care professional.

In five years we will have raised and awarded more than $175,000 in scholarships and helped nearly 200 student nurses overcome their financial difficulties and stay the course. We know we've already impacted more than a hundred lives but how many more lives might benefit from our efforts?

Think of how many of life’s most significant, highly emotional moments involve a nurse. Because of this reach into people's personal lives, nurses play an essential role in the overall quality of our lives. If through our efforts only one scholarship recipient manages to save only one life during their professional career, we think we will have achieved an extraordinary return on our effort.

Our Club sponsors the Nightingale Gala which is held annually during or near national nurses week. The Gala is all about increasing our support for nurses and the nursing profession and includes both a Leadership Award and non-competitive individual Nursing Excellence Awards. Our awards recognize the outstanding contributions made by nurses here in our community.

By now, most everyone is acutely aware of the worldwide shortage of nursing care professionals and the impact this shortage is currently having on delivering quality health care to those in need. If this shortage continues into the future the results may be catastrophic not only for us but for our children, and grandchildren for generations to come. That's why we're working with our Nursing Colleges to provide financial assistance to those struggling nursing students who may need that extra bit of financial assistance to stay the course and ultimately reach their goal to provide quality nursing care.

In addition to our primary nursing scholarship project, we have also taken on a number of smaller projects such as providinh shoes and underwear for needy children at Clarity Child Guidance Center as well as support for District and other area club programs .

Our membership shared the dream and are working feverishly to “make it happen.” If you too share our enthusiasm for this worthwhile effort, we invite you to join us at our next meeting. We meet every Tuesday at 11:45 at Cha Cha's Restaurant, 2026 Babcock Rd. across from the UTHSCSA in the Medical Center. We look forward to seeing you soon.
